What is HDTV?
High Definition Television, or HDTV, gives viewers crystal-clear pictures and provides high-resolution widescreen High Definition programming, integrated with Dolby® Digital 5.1 channel surround sound that makes the television viewing experience come to life. Not since the advent of color television has there been a more dramatic change in the way the television is experienced.
HDTV is the highest digital TV resolution in the new set of standards. The combination creates a stunning image with stunning sound, the entertainment experience that has been imagined but was never possible on standard analog televisions. HDTV reproduces theater-quality sights and sound by digitizing TV programming, allowing it to be transmitted and received the same way that a DVD player can reproduce movies with big-screen quality effects. Films retain their original width, enhancing your home theater experience. Imagine seeing more of a football field or a scenic panorama!
The higher resolution picture is the main selling point for HDTV. Imagine 720 or 1080 lines of resolution compared to the 525 lines people are used to — it’s a huge difference!

HD services transmit as many as 10 times more pixels, or picture frames, than you are used to seeing on a standard broadcast television, resulting in sharper, more lifelike colors and richer sounds.

HD programs are broadcast in widescreen (16:9) format. Unlike standard (4:3) format, which causes some images to appear squeezed in the middle or cut off along the sides of the screen. Widescreen HD broadcasts reproduce screen images as they were originally meant to be seen.
An HDTV compatible television and an ACS Video HD set-top box are required in order to receive this service. ACS currently offers nine high-definition channels which include ESPN HD, Discovery HD Theater, Outdoor Channel HD, Universal HD, FOX HD, NBC HD, CBS HD, ABC HD and PBS HD. In addition, more HD channels will be available on ACS Video soon. As HDTV grows in popularity, ACS Video will strive to provide its customers with all the great programming, look and sound only high-definition can deliver.
